New Programs, Partners & LocationsWest Africa
NigeriaCapacitar collaborated with new partners in 2008 to offer workshops in three regions of Nigeria - Itam, Ibadan and Minna.
The Trauma/AIDS workshops, facilitated by Pat Cane, were funded by Trocaire, Catholic Development Agency of Ireland, and coordinated by Dr. Felicia Muoneke, MMM, the national coordinator of AIDS outreach for the Medical Missionaries of Mary. Participants came from many groups and included: AIDS caregivers, nurses, doctors, counselors, psychologists, religious, teachers, centers working with trauma and violence, and formators. Plans are underway for an in depth training for 2009-2010. Sierra Leone
In August 2008 Pat Cane worked in three regions of Sierra Leone - Makeni, Kenema and Freetown. The wellness workshops were a response to the needs of people deeply affected by ten years of civil war, poverty and corruption. Dr. Ann Stevens, SJC, coordinated the workshops with funding from Trocaire, the Catholic Development Agency of Ireland. Participants came from many communities throughout Sierra Leone including: doctors, nurses, psychologists, teachers, counselors, HIV centers, priests, vicars, religious, deaf and hearing impaired, blind, amputees, and people working with HIV and epilepsy. United KingdomScotland & EnglandCapacitar offered its first workshop in Perth, Scotland in May 2008 coordinated by Ali Newell and Erica Robb. Participants included chaplains, psychologists, therapists, teachers, religious, persons working with refugees and the tortured. Because of great interest, an in depth training is scheduled for 2009-2010.
