Capacitar: A Brief History

Capacitar International has offered workshops in Mexico since 1996, in collaboration with the Franciscan Sisters, in Palenque and the surrounding communities. From 1999-2002, International Service for Peace coordinated Trauma Healing trainings in San Cristobal de Las Casas for Mayan and grassroots human rights leaders. Service for Peace and Justice sponsored workshops in Villa Hermosa and Vernet for grassroots leaders working nonviolently for human rights.  Capacitar has also collaborated with Borderlinks in Nogales, as well as with community groups in Tijuana. In 2012 workshops were offered for hundreds of teachers, parents and students at three schools in León, as well as for grassroots communities. Future workshops are being planned for other parts of Mexico.

A Texas/Mexico border team--Capacitar en la Frontera--currently works with communities in Ciudad Juarez affected by the ongoing drug cartel violence.
