Capacitar: A Brief History

WELCOME TO CAPACITAR IRELAND!

Capacitar Ireland offers simple wellness practices that can be used to counter the stresses and emotional upheavals of day to day living.  The use of these healing skills can empower us to live with peace and wellbeing, no matter what is happening around us.

The first Capacitar workshops were given in Dublin in 2003, when Toni Ryan invited Pat Cane to facilitate a workshop in the Shanty Educational Project.  The first Multicultural Wellness Education Training programme began the following year in Dublin.  Since then there have been 14 trainings throughout the island of Ireland with Pat Cane; in Banbridge, Lurgan, Armagh, Dublin, Cork, Galway and Carlow.  Participants have been drawn from all professions and have included teachers, nurses, doctors, childcare workers, therapists, community and development workers, carers and trauma workers, all of whom have integrated Capacitar practices into their work.

In 2006, Capacitar Ireland was established as a Company Ltd by Guarantee and was granted charitable status and Kathleen Day has been working voluntarily as our national co-ordinator.  Throughout 2007 and 2008, 26 people underwent a further training as Capacitar Tutors with Pat.  This allowed them to become insured as Capacitar tutors under the auspices of Capacitar Ireland and to lead Capacitar workshops.

Part of the mission of Capacitar Ireland is to support Capacitar International.  Links with TRÓCAIRE helped in securing funding for Capacitar development in Rwanda, Burundi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda, East Timor and Brazil.  Some of our tutors have also been involved in Capacitar outreach in Sri Lanka after the tsunami, in Peru after the earthquake and in Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya, Colombia and Brazil.

We maintain links with different parts of the country through regualar Gathering Day Rituals linked to the Celtic seasons of Imbolg, Bealtaine, Lugnasa and Samhain.  Capacitar Ireland has also written Level 2 FETAC modules in Childcare and Capacitar practices.

See below for up-coming workshops and trainings and please feel free to contact us with any queries or if you would like to invite a Capacitar tutor to work with your organisation.
